Deck Scrub Brush: Frequently Asked Questions
What brush should I use to scrub a deck?
Use a stiff bristle deck scrub brush designed for exterior wood, like the Restore-A-Deck Bi-Level Wood Deck Scrub and Wash Brush. Its bi-level shape keeps bristles in contact with the surface from multiple angles, which lifts dirt, mold, and mildew more effectively than a standard flat brush or household scrub brush.
How do I scrub a deck before staining?
Apply a deck cleaner like Restore-A-Deck Wood Cleaner, let it dwell for 5-15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff bristle brush attached to a threaded pole, working with the grain of the wood. Focus extra scrubbing on mildew stains and heavily grayed areas before rinsing thoroughly.
Should I use a deck brush or a pressure washer?
Both have a role. A deck brush physically breaks up dirt, mold, and mildew that a pressure washer alone can miss, especially in grain and corners. Pressure washing is best for rinsing the cleaner off afterward. Using a brush before or during cleaning, then rinsing with a hose or pressure washer, gets the best results.
How do I apply deck cleaner with a brush?
Spray or pour the mixed cleaner onto the wood, then scrub it in with a deck scrub brush while the surface is still wet, working in manageable sections so the cleaner doesn’t dry before you rinse. Let it dwell as directed before rinsing thoroughly with a hose or pressure washer.
How long should a deck dry after scrubbing before staining?
Let the deck dry for at least 24-48 hours after cleaning and rinsing before staining, unless you’re using Restore-A-Deck Wood Stain, which can be applied to damp wood. For full guidance on timing and prepping your deck before staining, see DeckStainHelp’s complete guide to staining a deck.

Is the washing brush by DBQ model 11761? If I am scrubbing the first coat (put on a year ago) in prep for the 2nd coat of semi-transparent stain…will it remove dirt and mold, but keep the first coat of stain on? Also, I am not sure I will have the weather conditions to do the second coat. If I wait 6 months, will I be ok?
Not sure on the model #. It will remove some of the old stain. You can lightly clean and reapply as needed.
