Hello! I’m interested in stripping the red finish from this deck and restaining it to look more natural/show the woodgrain. I have no idea what kind of stain the previous home owner used. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
That’s a solid stain, so you would need the RAD Paint Strip. Give the sample a try to see the effectiveness.
I’m trying to remove one coat of Behr solid deck stain with PaintStrip, and it’s only brightening my test spot, not actually lifting the solid stain. I applied it in the evening (under 80 degrees) according to the instructions. Any troubleshooting tips?
Test Patch:
Before general use, test on a small area to determine compatibility, required dwell time, and coverage for desired results. For an estimated 5 or less coats, scrape a section of the area with a stripping tool after one hour of dwell time. If not easily down to wood after one hour, leave on longer and test again hourly. For 10 – 15 coats of paint, cover with plastic and wait 24 hours to test. For best results, cover the stripper with plastic and do not allow to dry.
-Do not mist with water, as that can deactivate the stripper.
-Apply liberally.
–For best results, agitate with a stiff bristle brush and then remove by either scraping or pressure washing. Always pressure wash at an angle so that the water jet acts as a chisel.
I’ve tried including a photo of the test spot, but it doesn’t seem to be uploading, at least on my end. I applied the product liberally and checked it after an hour. The scraper only seemed to be getting a layer of dirt off, not to wood under the 1 layer of solid stain. So I added another layer of stripper and put plastic over it for overnight. I checked around the 24 hour point and it was just tacky. I tried agitating with a bristle brush (both times) and that didn’t do anything. When you say “do not allow to dry,” does that mean I need to keep applying more product if the plastic isn’t keeping it moist?
Please add some pics. Make sure you are using a .jpg file and the size of the pictures are under 1 mb.
Here you go! It was the file size (but it doesn’t give you an error).
For the product to work correctly. It needs to penetrate through the paint and “soften’ the bond between the wood and the paint. It needs dwell time and a heavy application. In your case, your paint looks very thick. Is the stripper drying out before it has time to work?
Curious, do you know what type of coating is on the deck and why it is different than the railings? Is it a “Deck Surface” type coating like Behr Deck Over or Rust-Oleum Deck Restore? If so, no stripper will work on those coatings.
The product applied was quite thick and it may have been Behr Overdeck, which I thought was a solid stain. The railings are different because the job wasn’t completed.
Unfortunately, with deck resurfacing-type coatings like Behr Deckover, no stripper will work. These products are a nightmare for homeowners, as not only do they peel, but they also rot the wood and are extremely hard to remove when needed. There have been class action lawsuits against both Behr and Rust-Oleum because of this.

Wow what a bummer. I’ve started sanding it down and I’ve made some decent progress, to the point you can see the grain coming through where the Deckover hasn’t come off completely. Is it worth trying the Paintstrip on these sections now? Will it cause problems if it gets on the exposed wood?
Try a sample, it might work since much has been removed:
Is the RAD Paint & Solid Stain Stripper – Sample Size $24.99, the same as paintstrip.
Yes, it is.
I bought my house two years ago and the previous owners used some demon paint on the deck – the sun removed some patches but nothing could remove it all. I attempted various different things to clean and prep my deck from the big box stores with limited success and was about to admit defeat and just replace all my boards. However, this sample brought back my faith to restore my deck. The wet part was restore a deck a sample and completely made the boards look like new, the dark color stain was the weathered beat up boards with the full paint, and the light boards at the bottom where after failed attempts to use products recommended by sales reps at the big box stores.
Looking good! 😀
What stripper should I use on this deck? Approx 300 sq.ft., 20 year-old redwood deck with older railings. Substructure is still good. We love this deck – for years we put on Sikkens SRD (first transparent, then semi), but 5 years ago I decided to switch to semi-solid (BM Arborcoat) to have the older railings and decking be same color. Absolutely regret it! I’d love the decking to be back to semi-transparent so the redwood can come through, and will paint (semi-solid) the railings again in contrast. The deck gets full sun, San Francisco Bay Area so rain but no frost, snow.
It looks opaque so you would need the RAD PaintStrip to get this coating off.
How many coats of Semi transparent stain should i use on a deck that had solid stain on it . I used the RAD solid stain paint stripper and sanded it off and now ready to use RAD semi transparent deck stain.
Just apply one coat if you sanded the wood.
Need help on what to use as far as stripper for two items. One is a cedar fence with a stain, other item is a table with teak or eucolyptos type wood with I believe is stained. Pictures taken after cleaner and brightner applied to both.
Do you know what stain brand and type is around the knots on the fence? It looks opaque and different than the other fence panels.
No I do not know. The stain brand around the knots on the fence is about eight to 10 years old. The other panels I just completed a few weeks ago with typical RAD process becuase as they were not stained with the same product as the remaining panel
Can you send a close-up of the stain around the knots? We need to confirm if it is opaque, and you will need to use the RAD PaintStrip to remove it.
attached is picture
Attached is fence picture.
Regarding 2nd picture in first posting, will PaintStrip be applicable, it is teak or similar type wood?
The fence is made of pine, and we would use the RAD PaintStrip to spot-apply around the knots to remove it. Then, we would wash the rest of the wood and brighten it all.
For the table, most is removed, so you could use our regular deck stripper there or the RAD PaintStrip if you prefer to work with one product.
