We will reply to your comment shortly· 10/19/2021Went over with cleaner, brightener, then 2 coats of semi-transparent stain. Overall looks great, but some areas seems white-ish. Is it normal? Should I add one more coat?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyHello, we built our 3-story porch in 2017, waited a year for it to weather then in 2018 the porch was stained with RAD semi-transparent. We are now re-staining again using the same color, after cleaning and brightening, should we use one coat or two? Also, photo shows how stain has worn on the horizontal surfaces but hardly on the verticals, do we just re-stain everything with the same amount of coats? Thank you in advance
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyClean and brighten for prep and one coat to rails and two to the horizontals.

We will reply to your comment shortlyDoes the second coat have to be applied 20 minutes to 1 hour after first, or is that just the soonest second coat can be applied?

-
We will reply to your comment shortlyDoes Restore A Deck semi-transparent "Natural" color stain have UV protection in it? If, so, is it the same amount of UV protection as the other colors available from RAD?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYes, it has the same UV protection as the other colors and it is tinted, not clear.
-
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyI purchased 5 gallons (two 2 1/2 containers) of light walnut semi-transparent. Can I "mix" the stain by shaking it in the container, or does it have to be put into a bucket in order to stir?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyShaking is the easiest way.
-
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyuse sprayer to apply?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYou can spray the RAD Semi-transparent stains.

We will reply to your comment shortlyHi, Can I stain if it's 80% humidity and will rain approx 4 hours after application? I read 4-6 hours and it can handle rain but not sure how the humidity affects that
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyHumidity does not affect the drying time. 4 hours is the minimum so you are cutting it close.

We will reply to your comment shortlyI am looking to apply this weekend, but there is possibly rain in the forecast for the afternoon. What is the time needed to dry for rain the same as the walk on time? 4-6 hours?
-
We will reply to your comment shortly4-8 hours.

We will reply to your comment shortlyI’ve already been through what feels like a lifetime of aggravation on this deck that I built. I originally did a lot of research on finishes & determined then that Cabot ATO [old oil formula] was the best for my needs. First time I went to re-stain, found out it was taken off the market. Ugh! Lots of HD-80 & was ready to have another go at it. I ended up choosing Armstrong Clark, Unfortunately I went with a Solid stain, & hated the color. Again, more HD80. The hardest part was the masking. There are 37 posts that are painted as well as having cedar trim all over them & the spindles, all 300 of them needed to be masked. They are made of copper & have a custom patina on them. What a PITA~!~ I’ve been through 2 other AC colors since. While I love AC, I’m not a fan of the algae & mold. My deck wraps from the front of the house, down the side & into the back. Regardless of the time of day, there is always shade somewhere, which is nice, but shade/mold, again. Ugh. One of the beauties of the AC is the ease in maintaining it, a good cleaner melts the finish off, as long as it’s the semi. Your cleaner is superb. I’ve never used a packaged cleaner before, I just made my own with great success.
I received my samples & did a test. Just this morning I made my decision & put in my order. I just hit the test spots with the cleaner, thinking it would melt like the AC does, but no it didn’t. I haven’t tried the stripper yet. I’ve read on here that for maintenance all that is needed for future coats is a cleaning then re-coating. Will the stripper take off the test finish? I don’t mind stripping but with all the cedar milling that is on the post, I’d die if I ever have to sand those again.-
We will reply to your comment shortlyThe Stripper will remove the AC stain.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyMy apologies for not being clear. My experience with AC is that Dawn will strip it. I was actually referring to the RAD Semi. Will the RAD stripper remove the RAD Semi completely?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYes.

We will reply to your comment shortlyI have just finished my deck and it looks like new. However, in fixing the steps, there has been dried mud and even a few cement stain. What is the best way to clean this without undoing the stain? Thanks
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYou probably cannot clean off the cement without harming the stain. Use warm water and dish soap for the mud.

-
We will reply to your comment shortlyDo guys have any experience using paint sprayers to apply the prep or stains. (Airless or otherwise) I'm thinking of prepping and staining with RAD Natural Semi-Transparent. I really like the convenience, but I don't want to shortcut my way into poor results.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYou cannot apply the prep with an airless sprayer. You can apply the stain with it but make sure it applies evenly without any drips or runs.
-
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyJust finished applying RAD semitransparent stain on my cedar deck (after the proper prepping: cleaner, power wash, brightener). Very happy with the result! However, I have two issues:1. How to fix some drips that I have not noticed in time to wipe them off, and when staining over them they look like dark spots? Should I sand the area and reapply?
2. I also have some areas that look a bit lighter than the rest. Should I apply a light second coat to blend the area in better?
Thank you!-
We will reply to your comment shortly1. You cannot spot fix or apply and have it blend. It may make it worse. Just leave as is.2. You cannot apply a second coat once the first coat has dried as it will not take. You can prep and recoat in 6-9 months.

We will reply to your comment shortlyI have weathered my deck for over a year. I power washed it and it looks OK - not completely the same color. My question is - the deck is 815 Sq Ft. How much product will I need for two coats of semi transparent or solid - including cleaner and brightener. Thank you.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyAbout 8 gallons for either stain. One of each prep.
-
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyWhat’s the best coating on IPE - clear non gloss ? How best to apply the cleaner and brightener - with a roller or brush ?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlySee here about IPE: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/Deck-Cleaning-Reviews-and-Tips/restore-a-deck-wood-stain-on-exotic-hardwoods-ipe.html
Use a pump sprayer to apply prep products and then pressure wash off.
-
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyToday I applied the cleaner on a never treated cedar fence and deck. Waited 20’ or so, then pressure washed it nicely. Applied the brightener, waited another 20’ and washed thoroughly. My problem is that there is still a lot of fuzzy stuff on the wood. Mostly on the privacy fence. Before staining it, should I sand it lightly, or wash it more, or..what?
Also, while wet, it looked great but it dried quite white in color. If I apply the stain on damp wood, would it keep the great wet look? Thanks-
We will reply to your comment shortlyThe stain will restore and enhance the color. Does not matter if applied to damp or dry wood. The fuzzy stuff is oxidation that was not removed fully. That typically does not show when stained.

We will reply to your comment shortlyAbout 10 months ago I flip the horizontal surface of my deck because I was not able to sand off the solid stain. Some of the boards were in bad shape so I replaced them with new boards they have weather now like I said for about 10 months. I plan to stain with a semi-transparent stain. I will need to put two coats on the boards that I flipped and one coat on the newer boards or just just apply either one or two coats to both the flipped board and the newer boards?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyJust one coat on all after prep.
-
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyI am planning to buy the semi-transparent cedar stain for my cedar deck, but I also have a pressure treated hemlock gate that I would like to stain as well. Could I use the stain for the gate?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYes.
-
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyI have a large cedar deck which was installed some 10 years ago. No treatment ever. Just power washed once a year. I just replaced some boards, so now some are brand new while most are the old gray ones. I plan to use your cleaner and brightener, sand it and power wash it as much as I can. Now, I also want to use your semi-transparent stain. Should I use the natural one or the cedar tinted one? I want as little visible difference between the old and the new boards, but also as much of the cedar's natural colour as well. 1 coat or 2? Thanks!
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyIt will not be possible to match new wood and old wood with the semi-transparent, does not matter the color. The new wood will stain lighter due to being less absorbent. See here for new wood tips: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/Deck-Cleaning-Reviews-and-Tips/restore-a-deck-stain-for-new-wood.html
After the wait and prep, apply one coat.-
We will reply to your comment shortlyThank you for the quick reply. It is fair to assume that even 6 months later the newer boards would look somewhat different than the older ones (although being more absorbent than they are now). At that time, would you recommend natural stain or cedar tinted one? Again, as close to cedar while as little difference between boards as possible. Thank you
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyColor is up to you. One will not blend better now or in 6 months. You can test samples: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/restore-a-deck-wood-stain/restore-a-deck-stain-samples.html

We will reply to your comment shortlyMy Deck is roughly 800sqft I purchased the stripper & brightener kit. Wondering if that is enough?
Also looking to purchase Stain. Decks IPE clear would be BEST?5Gallons would be enough for 800sqft ?-
We will reply to your comment shortlyHard to say if you have enough stripper as that depends on the condition and the difficulty of removing the old stain. You have IPE wood? 5-gallons will cover that with the one coat.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyWhat color Stain Should I Use For IPE?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyMost use Light Walnut.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyWill it pull the natural red of IPE?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYes.

-
We will reply to your comment shortlyI have a 3 year old deck that has mildew issues underneath the stain. Will stripping the deck get rid of the mildew? Does Restore-A-Deck wood stain have a mildew inhibitor?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyYes, stripping will kill the mildew. The RAD Stains do not promote mildew or mold growth like an oil based stain can.
-
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyApplication tools: Sprayer, Pad, Brush, Roller. I see you have said in comments to not use a roller. My deck is older and has rough wood. I hear the pads snag and need to be replaced often. Can I roller and back brush the stain?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyA roller will splatter and be difficult to apply using the semi-transparent stain. Use stain pads or a brush like this. Very easy: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/deck-tools/restore-a-deck-wood-staining-brush/flypage.tpl.html
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyCan I stain if the weather is starting out in the 30's but warming to 50 in the afternoon. The night will be in the 30's again.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyNo, it cannot drop into the 30s the night of staining.

-
We will reply to your comment shortlyMy deck is 800sq ft, how many coats of the grey stain do I need? How many gallons? Thanks.
-
We will reply to your comment shortly2 coats applied wet on wet: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/Deck-Cleaning-Reviews-and-Tips/restore-a-deck-stain-wet-on-wet-application.htmlAbout 6-8 gallons.

-
We will reply to your comment shortlyI cleaned and brightened my four year old cedar deck deck on Sept. 7. I notice you suggest cleaning/brightening and staining on same day. When I order and receive my the RAD Semi-transparent it will be over a week. Will I have to do any prep before applying the RAD?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyNo more prep is needed but you can mist with water and apply to a damp deck. https://www.restore-a-deck.com/Deck-Cleaning-Reviews-and-Tips/how-to-restore-a-deck-stain-to-damp-wood.html
-
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyI just had a cedar fence installed. Do I need to wait a few months before staining? Also if it’s a cedar fence do I pick cedar semi transparent or is the natural semi transparent basically a clear stain so the fence will be the same color as it is now? Also how many gallons for a 5 ft tall 64 ft long fence?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlySee here about new wood: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/Deck-Cleaning-Reviews-and-Tips/restore-a-deck-stain-for-new-wood.html
Natural is tinted, not clear. About 5-6 gallons after the wait and prep.-
We will reply to your comment shortlySo if I have the cedar fence and want to preserve it with its natural color should I use the natural semi transparent stain or the cedar semi transparent stain?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyEither color will work. Up to you as to how you want to tint the wood.
-
-
-
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyI plan to strip/clean on morning and then stain on the next. How soon can I walk on the freshly stained deck? Assume summer weather (80s and humid).
-
We will reply to your comment shortly2-6 hours.

We will reply to your comment shortlyAttached are 3 pictures of my deck. I wanted to do a change to a semi gray, but based on results so far that looks like it’s out of the picture. Picture 1 is the as is condition, most of the deck. Pic 2 is less sun/more overhangs. Pic 3 is sanded, and stripped/neutralized with RAD products. Looking for advice on how to proceed. Should I just strip, sand bad areas and treat, rent a 12x18 sanders and try to get it all off, etc. I still want to go gray, concerned about adhesion to the present finish, do not know what solid product was used but appears to be latex. Will the RAD solid adhere well if applied over solid of another brand.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyTo use a solid stain just strip and remove as much as you can. When it dries, spot sand any additional areas that need to be sanded due to peeling. You can then proceed with adding a new solid stain over the rest. It will adhere: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/restore-a-deck-wood-stain/restore-a-deck-solid-stain.html

We will reply to your comment shortlyI have a approx. 20x20 deck. One year old.Ready to stain. I have power washed it. I think it looks good. Should I just go ahead and stain it or do something else first? Want to use a semi-transparent stain.Thinking of using light walnut. One coat? Brush it on? How many gallons should I need? Thanks for your help
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyClean and brighten the wood for prep. One coat of the RAD stain to newer wood. Use a stain pad or brush to apply. As for coverage, you would need about 3 gallons for one coat to a 400 sq foot deck. Obviously, if you have railings, steps, etc. you will need more as your sq footage goes up.
-
We will reply to your comment shortlySo I should buy one clean and one brighten package and the 5 gallons of stain, correct? Is the stain pad easier/better that the brush? How long to wait between the clean and the brighten and the stain steps? Please advise. Thanks again
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyOne combo kit is correct: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/restore-a-deck-wood-stain/restore-a-deck-stain-combo-kits/restore-a-deck-wood-stain-5-gallons-and-cleaner-brightener-combo-kit/flypage.tpl.html
Stain pads or the stain brush work the same. All directions for prep and stain are on this website. See for tips: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/Deck-Cleaning-Reviews-and-Tips/how-to-restore-a-deck-in-one-day.html

We will reply to your comment shortlyI stripped and cleaned my cedar deck with other products and plan on some light sanding. The deck is 1 year old and is in excellent condition. I want to apply your semi-transparent natural oak stain. I would like to apply the stain after cleaning off the sanding residue. Do you recommend that I wait after sanding to apply the stain?
-
We will reply to your comment shortlyAfter sanding brighten the wood again and rinse well. Just one coat of the RAD Stain.
